H.E.N.C.H's Mensah's Sahara & More

Coming straight out of Bristol, the brainchild of Dubstep veteran Jakes, the H.E.N.C.H (Hard Earned, Never Caught Hustlin' for those that don't know) label is chock full of awesomely grimey/filthy/nasty artists like Jakes himself, the infamous Chasing Shadows, Eddie K and a more recent addition whose chunes I've REALLY been digging lately- Mensah.

Another homegrown talent, it looks like Bristol has done it again by pumping out another awesome dubstep producer. His first release Sahara came out back in September of this year and it is truly a fantastic track. Its got a catchy mid-tempo drop that maintains a beat steady enough to rap over but heavy enough to just jam out or nod your head to when you turn that sub up high.

Just gonna keep it short and share some of my favorite H.E.N.C.H releases. Savor... for these tracks are really delicious:

Jakes & Joker- 3k Lane (direct link from UhOhDisco)

Chasing Shadows- ILL (mediafire link)

Damian Marley- It Was Written (Chasing Shadows Remix) (mediafire link)

Eddie K- Who's The Hardest? (mediafire link)

Mensah- Sahara (mediafire link)

Till next time everyone, be easy. HM.

SUBvert. smpls tht dstry th dncflr.

I hate to do it again but I feel like I must... another post for an artist on Excision's Rottun Recordings out of British Columbia. I'm telling you people the guys on this label are out of this world, literally. I've already talked about the ear-splitting likes of Datsik, DZ and Excision himself and today I move to another of their comrades... Subvert. The guy is relatively new to the scene but is by no means an unknown.

His sound is chunky, chopped-up bassline goodness with some of the sickest use of popular samples that I have heard in a while (the way he weaves the Panjabi MC sample so seamlessly into Unknown Virus is pure fuckin gold, gotta love Mundian To Bach Ke). His Speaker Humpin' EP is one of my favorite dub/glitch releases of the year (I'm talking up there with Akira Kiteshi's Pinball/No Glitch EP).

So here you have it folks, my personal favorites from Speaker Humpin'... plus a couple bonuses since I mentioned them ;)

Subvert- Speaker Humpin (mediafire link)

Subvert- Unknown Virus (mediafire link)

Panjabi MC- Mundian To Bach Ke (mediafire link)

HELLA BONUS:
Akira Kiteshi- Pinball/No Glitch Part 1&2 EP (QOOY download)

till next time everyone. bE easY. HM.

sexstep?

I've seen this word, sexstep, thrown around the blogosphere lately in relation to dubstep maestro Skream... it seems that Croydon's golden child has come up with a term to describe that sensuously heavy, lustrously full-bodied sound that he has. In all honesty I kinda like it, its pretty catchy and the music it describes is simply fantastic. He used the term to describe his Chromeo remix which he released earlier this year but I think his still only-on-vinyl (I want to know why... why can't I just have the song on my itunes?) Skreamix of Show Me by VonD feat. Lady PhePhe is the real representation of "sexstep". Check it out, truly awesome- the sections with nothing but subwoofer shaking bass are eerily gorgeous and Lady PhePhe's voice is pure seduction.

So if you liked that here are a few more of my favorite Skream remixes with that signature sexstep sound:

Chromeo- Night By Night (Skream Remix) (mediafire)

La Roux- In For The Kill (Skream's Let's Get Ravey Remix)
(mediafire)

Mujava- Township Funk (Skream Remix) (mediafire)

till next time everyone, enjoy your sexstep and be easy. HM.

new yellow goodness!!

Time to pay a little attention to the house side of bassline music with one of my favorite artists of the latter part of this decade. They started producing their signature upbeat and uptempo wobbly sounding fidget house music (definitely my favorite branch of the house scene- think jack beats, crookers, a1 bassline, etc.) when the two Frenchmen teamed up in mid-2008 and I have loved just about every release from these two.

Mustard Pimp just tears it up on a few of their newer tracks and remixes (the stuff coming out in mid-late 2009 has been outstanding in my opinion)- they are building a solid core of originals and remixes for such a young pairing. They've only been in existence hardly over a year but have worked their way on to kid millionaire Steve Aoki's indie-dance label DIM MAK and released their first single (Cherry EP, classic) as members of the famous label which hold claim to artists like the bloody beetroots (maybe my all time favorite electronic producers), steve himself, MSTRKRFT, armand van helden, herve's first collaboraton project: machines dont care and many many more.

The duo's 3 latest releases are all four-to-the-floor bangers with awesome driving beats and a good mix of dark and light tones. These guys will be back on this blog soon enough. enjoy.

Dada Life- Let's Get Bleeped Tonight (Mustard Pimp Remix) (mediafire link)

Larry Tee- Let's Get Nasty (Mustard Pimp Remix) (direct link from GetHypedOnThis)

Mustard Pimp and Blatta & Inesha- Pigeon Flu
(direct link from Discobelle)

As a little bonus I'm gonna throw in an older unofficial MP remix that is pretty sweet and can be a little frustrating to track down:

The Hives- Main Offender (Mustard Pimp Remix) (mediafire link)

Also, that local post promised a while back is still coming... its all in the works...
till next time everyone. have a good tuesday and be easy. HM.

me i'm a creator, thrill is to make it up

Today's topic, after a prolonged break from posting thanks to a way-too-good thanksgiving break, is a guy from the other side of the country but whose music is just way-too-good for me to not post something about him. The guy has been in the bay area making amazing music for a while but I've only just heard about him through a friend. His latest compilation in the genre he coined the term for- Acid Crunk Vol. 2 (it might be the best compilation of bassline music I've ever heard, get it if you dont have it already) contains the likes of datsik, opiuo, akira kiteshi and the man himself: An-ten-nae.

His sound has just enough thick and heavy bass to rattle your ribcage but with enough upbeat melodies, out-there acapellas and nutty bells and/or whistles to keep the mood light and fun. Lately I have not been able to stop listening to his mix entitled "Punk Rock Country Hop"; believe it or not that title loosely represents the sound he throws at you in the mix.

The influences in the mix are literally endless, as it seems he has pulled a little something out of every genre and mashed it all into a half hour. It doesn't try too hard though, despite voice appearances from the likes of M.I.A. and Yelle it is NOT some unoriginal mashup mix you would hear from girl talk, SMB and the like lameness. It still incorporates orchestral violins, lots of bassline wobble, banging jungle drums and the expected loopy, cut-up madness that is acid-crunk.

So people, I implore you, head here (http://www.an-ten-nae.net/music.html) and feast your ears. You will not be dissapointed- punk rock country hop is a free 320, you have no excuse. And make sure to get your hands on that compilation, the cover has a cartoon cowboy with a hat and shades and a cartoon cowgirl type with a gun both sitting on a cartoon turquoise car placed in what appears to be the middle of the desert. seriously.

And as an added bonus one of my favorite songs from a similar artist (they actually perform together regularly in the bay area if I'm not mistaken)

Collie Buddz- Come Around (Mimosa Remix)

till next time everyone. be easy. HM.

wu-dub

its been a pretty hectic week of doing nothing for me... and as a result I havent posted anything up in a while, I'm posting this one from class too. Thaksgiving break is coming up and I have virtually a week of school(!). I still have that smile on my face from all those concerts of late and I ran across this album in the middle of it. A great way to combine my current passion for the Wu-Tang clan and the nasty, nasty dubstep of artists like Excision, Datsik, DZ, Trillbass, Stenchman and Evol Intent: Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 2: Enter The Dubstep. Anyone who likes both dub and the greats of east coast rap will love the majority of this CD (yea... some of the remixes are beats from other remixes but the fact that its Wu-Tang instead of Weezy just takes it to a different level). I vaguely remember volume one as a somehwhat failed attempt to mash Wu with some indie beats, but I cant confirm this as I cant find the sucker in my library. So without further a due here are my favorite tracks off the compilation:

Wu-Tang Clan- Biochemical Equation (Datsik & Excision Remix)

Wu-Tang Clan- Keep Hustlin (Trillbass Remix)

Wu-Tang Clan- Wu-Tang (DZ Remix)

SHAOLIN mother fuckers. till next time, be easy people. HM.

p.s.- next post should be a local one, gonna give a shout to a good DJ in the boston area who is a friend of mine and just cut a new mix. dub or be dubbed.

THAT SICK

Yea. He really is one of my fav's, cant genough of him he's just dat-sik. unreal robot sounds of gigantic machines that don't exist yet throwing large metallic boomerangs at you. its awesome. believe me. Just check out these tracks if you haven't heard of him yet. The rest of the guys on his label (Exicsion's EX7 & Rottun) are all mind blowing too. The dubstep scene in the British Columbia is really thriving; if you dont believe me look at excisions opening to his shambhala set from this august: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8YpwWAIiWg
that opening track (its called Subsonic) hasn't been released and i'm absolutely chompin' at the bit...

My favorite DatsiK track (he used to be a hip-hop DJ/producer hence the method man sample, just filthy)
DatsiK- Southpaw

(credit to A.S. for this one haha) THIS TRACK MADE ME EAT THE BIBLE
Excision & DatsiK- Swagga

yippy kay yay motherfucker. i always shower after listening to this one (*classic* youtube comment: "listening to this feels like shoving animal feces into my ear canals").
DatsiK- Nuke 'Em

BONUS: its a pretty rare one guys
DatsiK- Fathom

hope everyone has a good day/night, wherever you are and whoever your there with. be easy. HM

Akira Kiteshi, Hwan Kim, Ulysses and His Parachute Landing

So back to crunk and glitch dub stuff. i honestly dont even know what to call it. Akira Kiteshi is sick, glitch-hop and acid-crunk fans listen the hell up... GO GET THE PINBALL/NO GLITCH EP! its has a respectfully dirty bassline with tons of ambient psychedlia and subtle tweaks. awesome stuff.

Akira Kiteshi- Ulysses (Original Mix)... big ups to the guys at Danger!Danger! for this one...

Parachute Landing of Ulysses (Hwan Kim's Mashup)

i need to include a little personal note too, went to Brand New (my first rock show of any sort believe it or not) tonight with someone who i'd say is super awesome at the least... I had an amazing time, ultra-nostalgic if you know what i mean (a little bit of leftover teen angst from the singapore days? the taste of marb lights in my mouth... is it still cool?). most of all tho it completed my week of musical revival. bassnectar, ghostface killah, and brand new in a perfect 7 days. dont think i've ever loved music more then I do NAO!

so a little bonus, my fav brand new song which they dropped at tonights show. unreal. like a little piece of heaven itself.

Brand New- Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't

good night all, and remember... "Actions have reactions, don't be quick to judge. you may not know the hardships people don't speak of, it's best to step back, and observe with couth for we all must meet our moment of truth". be easy people. HM.

why rap SUCKS nowadays but its cool my friends are saving it

so last friday i went to a ghostface killa show and it was awesome, he played old stuff, new stuff, random stuff- his flow is still top notch folks... to me the new album is both good and bad. some of the songs still hold that old school wu-tangy essence but alot of it features artists like kanye west, ne-yo and john legend (with a member of wu-tang? srsly?!). tracks like let's stop playin' and the back like that remix perfectly represent the change from the good rap of the 90's and early 00's to what we have to put up with on the airwaves today.

I'm not trying to hate on ghostface, he is and always will be a legend, but who i am hating on is the artists featured on those songs (not john legend really, he's p talented i just dont think he should be singing with GFK) and the direction modern rap has taken. the mainstream nowadays relies FAR too much on overly catchy synthetic sounds, borrowed lame-house beats and most of all (this is just the worst thing that has ever happened to music imo) that stupid voice flanger effect that kanye loves and that southpark (fuckyea!) totally ripped on in GAY FISH!

What happened to real rap? What happened to freestyles like the one Big L made in '98? When did rappers decide to let Sony or BMG tell them what to say (no you cant have whatever you like bitch, or i'll take your gucci back and your north face of your back)? why cant we have more rap about what actually happens on the street and in rappers lives? i dont care how raw or hard or bad it is... its (and its not all bad people, if you havent heard moment of truth by gang starr then you haven't learned how to live your life yet) TRUTH... its what actually happens to the people spittin the rhymes. the mainstream just doesn't get this and its sad in my opinion. wake-up people, wu-tang forever! BROOKLYN ZOO!!!!!

time for me to give a shout to a buddy of mine down in VA, he goes by Blasé (formerly known as Elevated Learning) and my boy has a fuckin classic sound and he raps about us and our friends... REAL SHIT! his producer is pretty sick too, excpect more from Blasé and C-Enes around here in the near and far future. here is his remix of Asher Roth's Lark on my Go Kart plus a nice little original track. enjoi. http://www.myspace.com/elevatedlearning

Blasé- Lark on my Go Kart (Asher Roth/E.L. Remix)... i really hate it when ppl ash on my carpet, dont do it. ever.

Blasé- Hot Box (feat. J. Smith) yo anyone at Pace University check out my man J.Smith, good shit for sure.

o right i also promised some downloadable opiuo last post so here is king prawn. ridiculous.(this is still a dub blog people, i just had to get this out there)

Opiuo- King Prawn

have a good day everyone. peace out. HM.
